On Friday, April 4, 2003 at 02:33:29 a tribute was placed here to Honor SGT Lloyd E. Gardner American World War 2 soldier who died in France
Lloyd E. Gardner was my mother's youngest brother. He died in France during World War 2. I have been living in France for almost thirty years now. In a way, he has always stood as a proud, indelible link of the past between myself and France. Recently, my brother sent me a "humurous" email about all the American World War 2 GIs who were buried in France, now turning over in their graves, because of the stance taken by France vis-a-vis the war being waged against Irak. I found that joke so tasteless.... It made me think of my so-young-of-an uncle, who died in that war of wars, without the proper due recognition he deserved, it would seem. You see, his name is not to be found on the list of WW2 Americans, fallen in France. I wonder why? All of this made me enquire as to where in fact he was buried. My family was convinced it was in somewhere in France. The answer came quickly: "The remains of SGT Lloyd E. Gardner, 6850169, who was temporarily buried at the St. James Cemetery, Avranches, France, were repatriated to the U.S. for permanent interment in North Carolina." I have made a second enquiry, to know just where he is buried in North Carolina.... In a way, I feel so sorry for this seemingly forgotten young man, not having had the time to found his own family, and with virtually all of his sisters and brothers now dead, and even lacking the rightful recognition in France as a US soldier who laid down his life in that land for us all, for our freedom. This is a loving message from his niece, in France, proud of him, of his acheivement, of his sacrifice -- and not least of all, of his death-sealed link to France. by Susan Almstead-Treffel from Binghamton, New York (but living in France for nearly thirty years) E-mail address: susan.almstead-treffel@insead.edu |

On Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 12:15:29 a tribute was placed here to Honor George E. Hulett Sr. Floyd C. Fritts William Jennings Bryan Billy J. Ritchie
We are a veteran family, from WWI-William Jennings Bryan, WWII-George E. Hulett Sr. & Floyd C. Fritts, and Viet Nam-Billy J. Ritchie. These were all veterans in the US Army. I have a nephew Brian Ritchie that served proudly in the Navy, an Uncle, Robert D. Leo who also served in the Navy. We are proud of our vets and honor them, in this family. Without their courage and bravery, none of us would sleep safe in our beds at night or have the honor to watch our children grow. If these vets didn't pay the price of glory with their lives, they paid with their deeds and service. We need to remember those still in service...and say our prayers for safety that they might return home to their loved ones..while they are "standing guard" and defending our PEACE! by Nancy Hulett Bright from Newport, Arkansas E-mail address: briteyes@ipa.net Website: The Byrd/Hulett |

On Sunday, February 16, 2003 at 09:58:42 a tribute was placed here to Honor All Forgotten Soldiers You stand proudly as the banner of our nation passes by. Your hand raises in a smart salute to the colors so many have died for. For a moment you think of comrades that laid down their lives that these colors may wave proclaiming the freedom of our nation. After these beloved colors pass you by, what then. Do you remember the ultimate sacrifice of your brethren. Do you look askance at the crippled survivors of our nations conflicts. It is easy to see those that gave their limbs, but what of those that gave their hearts and minds. Those that never really returned from those awful conflicts. Yes, they walk among you, they act perhaps a little different that what you would consider the norm. Their pain is born of the spirit, not of the body. They relive day by day the horrors they have seen and endured. They suffer, most in silence for they fear the derision of the ones they once called friend and peer. They hide in shame their pain and anguish over things they did or had done to them. A tear falls from my eye each time I see a so called brother in arms turn his face away from one who is in need. Remember, there but for the grace of God go each and every one of us. I speak not of those whose infirmity is obviously seen when they ride their chair of iron instead of walking proudly as all men should do. I speak instead of those whose anguish lies in the daily travail of dealing with the common tasks of day to day living made all but impossible by thoughts and feelings of inadequacy. Inadequacy in not being like those others that smile and joke and relive memories of pleasantry. They relive moments of camaraderie and tales of those waiting for them back home. What of those that no longer fit into the mold, those that have left the camaraderie behind because they have no comrades left to discourse with. Those are the fellows that my salute goes to, they are the ones who rest in my heart, they are the ones who I remember each time those proud stripes and bright stars pass by. They are the heroes, the forgotten ones, the ones I shall always remember and call my brothers in arms. by Ray Waldbrunn 12th SOG '67, '68, '69 |

On Thursday, February 6, 2003 at 19:22:14 a tribute was placed here to Honor My grandpa Marvin H Hurd WW2 vet
My grandpa just passed on last night so it's hard to deal with life with out having him. I knew it was coming but I didn't want it to. For so long I really never went by his house and told him that I loved him or just to talk but when I did he made me feel so loved and in return I loved him more than I ever had in the past. I remember him taking me shooting for the first time he made me feel comfortable and safe when the blasting of guns went off. My grandpa was a very unique man in everybodys life that knew him. He could make anyone laugh, sad and even scared. But I really miss him and I love him, he was an angel among us. I just wish that I had kids so they to could have met the nicest, most honest, caring, loving man that had survived WW2. We all miss and love him and hope he carries out his new duties on the other side. Wait for us all grandpa Hurd we will come to be with you when the good Lord says it's time. Your grandson Marvin E.
