It has been 2 1/2 years since Larry lost his battle against cancer, and yet it seems like yesterday. He was a man who loved life and loved this country and fought to protect our freedom. He defended the rights of many deserving veterans and gave them and their families hope for the future. Although I honor his memory today with this small memorial, there will never be enough words to describe how much he was loved and respected by his fellow man. We all miss him very much. by E-mail address: illbfine47@aol.com |

On Monday, July 16, 2001 at 12:00:07 a tribute was placed here to Honor I. M. Hopkins
Known to many of his friends as 'Pap', and to his shipmates as 'Happy', my grandfather served in the U.S. Navy during the second World War aboard the DE-330 USS O'Reilly. To his four grandsons, he was known as 'Pabbles', thanks in part to the youngest grandson, Wesley...(he had trouble saying Pa-Paw, and it came out Pabbles). Pabbles was called home back in 1994 and has been missed everyday since. On September 8, 2000, Erin 'Mackenzie' Ricks, Pabbles' first great-grandchild was born to Eric, the oldest grandson. I really wish that Pabbles could spend these years visiting with Mackenzie instead of only watching from above, but I know he is bragging about her all around Heaven. Pabbles, always know that you are missed by your grandsons, Eric, Coy, Brian, and Wesley and know that your great-granddaughter, Mackenzie, will learn all about you as she grows up. I'm sure her great-grandmother will have many stories to tell her. I. M. Hopkins 04SEPT24 - 05JULY94 by Eric D. Ricks from Pearl, MS, E-mail address: RicksE@gsci.state.ms.us |

On Friday, July 13, 2001 at 12:36:40 a tribute was placed here to Honor Damon Gene Guyer of Brown County, Texas
When my grandfather, Damon Guyer, was sixteen years old, he convinced his mother to sign papers saying he was seventeen and joined the Marine Corps. He was on his way to Japan. Along the way he met many people, one of whom was the brother in law of the late Gene Autry. A funny story he told was that Mr. Autry's brother in law kept running away from the California boot camp and that Mr. Autry kept having to bring the unfortunate lad back. My grandfather served in the South Pacific. He saw the islands, ate the fruit, walked barefoot on exotic tropical beaches. And he got shot at. He saw his friends shot down on both sides of him and die. He himself was only hit with shrapnel, but that was purely the grace of God and nothing less can explain it. Sixteen years old and he was killing men in the name of freedom and justice, and before God I am proud of him to this day! When I was a little girl my grandfather used to sit me on his lap and we would watch movies. We watched a lot of Westerns -- he taught me to love the Duke -- and we watched a lot of WWII movies. And he would explain to me that those movies were more than just movies. "You see, sugarfoot," he would say as I leaned against his shoulder and listened, "those things really did happen. I was at those islands, and on those ships, and on those planes. I was often one of the first men to set foot on land. I got shot at, and I shot back. Yes, I even killed men, but that is what this country is built on, is fighting for what is Right and True and what you Believe in. And what kind of Americans are we, if we don't fight for people in other places who can't fight for themselves?" My grandfather taught me that it was wrong to fear or hate our soldiers. He taught me that the saddest time in American history was when the citizens of this great nation spat in the faces of the men who had given their time -- and in some cases their lives -- in Vietnam. He taught me to stand tall and proud when I saw the fireworks on Independence day or heard someone sing The Star Spangled Banner. He taught me that sometimes that flag was all that got him and his companions through the night. He taught me that it is wicked and sinful to burn that flag. He taught me the Pledge of Alliegence and told me to never forget what people had sacrificed in the name of God and Country and Flag to give me what I have today. Today my grandfather is dead. He died of cancer in 1994. But those things he taught me live on, and I am teaching my own three children the values and beliefs that he taught me. Men and women who have served our country: Thank you. God bless you. I love you. You have given me the freedom to raise my children in a safe and God blessed nation, and for that I can never repay you except with words. Words, however, are not enough to express what I feel. They are all I have, and so I offer them to you with all my heart. Thank you. by Shane McBride from North Carolina, Texas, points in between, E-mail address: camprednecks@aol.com |

On Saturday, July 7, 2001 at 23:29:17 a tribute was placed here to Honor My Father, Virgil W. Roberson, World War II Veteran
My father entered the Army in November of 1942 at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. He was in Normandy GO 33 Wd 45, Rhineland GO 40 WD 45 and Central Europe-Northern France GO 46 WD 45. He was a Tech 5 rank in the DML Division. Sometimes known as "Shorty", he was a great & loving Dad. Sadly, he passed away on February 27,1999. How I wished I had paid more attention to some of his stories about the war. Now, I would like to find others who may have served with him. We love you and miss you so much! You made us proud! On Saturday, July 7, 2001 at 14:28:35 a tribute was placed here to Honor Henry Birchfield, My Grandfather 2/2/22 - 8/7/2000
My Grandfather was one of the most wonderful men I have ever known. During WWII, he served in the 413th Regiment and landed in Normandy on D-Day. He participated in the Battle of the Buldge, the Invasion of France and Germany, and the Ardennes counterattack. He was an antiaircraft artillery gun crewman, and among his many awards were five gold stars. I miss my Grandfather so much. He was a very proud man. He always had words of wisdom, and not to mention several stories. It was very important to him to know that he was needed. I am very glad to say that we needed him, and his country needed him. Grandpa, I miss you and I love you very much. I will always remember you. You are in my thoughts and in my prayers. Everyday I talk to my grandpa, I am reminded that all the "little" things I take for granted in life are the things brave men and women across the country fought for me to enjoy.
