The Galloping Ghost of the Korean Coast was the Destroyer Ernest G. Small DD-838. The name was suggested by the writer of a story appearing in Our Navy magazine. The Small had been mined in the Harbor at Hungnam, while returning to Japan about 85 feet of her bow broke off in heavy seas. The Small made it to the port of Kure, staeming backwards and under tow by a fleet tug, a distance of about 400 miles.
